I've seen screens of FF3-DS, and... I don't know. I played FF3 for the Famicom, and I think (maybe I'm the only one) that it's one of the better games in the series. The first to introduce the battle system, the first to introduce percussion in the music as well as the Fat Chocobo. It was also the first to include a massive battleship (similar to the Lunar Whale), and even Cecil's (FF4) map sprite.
The game preview I saw was rendered in polygonal graphics, the Onion Knights (the main characters of FF3-FC), have different looks - basically taking the Onion Knight away (as far as we know it). I'll probably get it because I am such a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, but... it just looks so disappointing. All I have to say, is that the music better be the same tunes revamped. The bosses better be the same ones, and the same with the enemies. Otherwise... it won't be Final Fantasy III... just a stupid game with a Final Fantasy Title.

I mean that Final Fantasy VI was released over here as Final Fantasy III to preserve the continuity of the series. Likewise, Final Fantasy IV was released over here as Final Fantasy II for the same reasons.

Hi,
There is one glaring error in your review my friend. The general storyline that you quoted is not from Final Fantasy III, it is from Final Fantasy VI. The Final Fantasy III for the DS, which, from what I understand may or may not be released in the U.S. is a remake of the original Final Fantasy III that came out for the Nintendo Famicom system. Which, consequently was the first Final Fantasy in the series to have the job system. If this game has any commonalities with any of the other games in the series, it would be Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy V (Final Fantasy Anthology); the game really does not have anything in common with Final Fantasy VII. Seeing as how they are updating an 8 Bit game to modern times, it will definitely have better graphics and music. Final Fantasy IV was released over here as Final Fantasy III to preserve the continuity of the series for the United States. If it is released in the United States, it will mark the first time that this game will have been released over here.
                                    Cordially,
                                              Jeremy R. Rutherford
