Final Fantasy XII released in Japan!
Glorious news indeed, Final Fantasy XII — the game we’ve all been waiting literally years for — has finally been released in Japan. There’s now no fear of the game that is astonishing Japanese gamers not being released in the US and UK as was briefly feared.

The game is doing well in the large gaming sites reviews and “story so far” articles, and so we can surely expect a rare treat when we finally get hold of a copy. The game supposedly innovates in ways unlike other RPGs, but we’ll hopefully cover the game soon with reviews and such like.
In other news, the Final Fantasy Net topsite list now has a massive 200 buttons displaying the rankings of our members. We only had 20 before, so it is a big addition! If you’re not already a member, and you have a site - do please join up!

I just finished the JP version of the game (with some translation help). I can say this: the game is INCREDIBLY well done. I speak no Japanese, and I was able to figure out how to play the game immediately. Very good interface. The story is rich, but in my opinion not as good as previous FFs. Don’t get me wrong, still worth the time invested (I’m at 200+ hours and still going) but the characters are somehow less believable overall. The cutscenes/movies and the artwork (levels, characters, weapons, mobs, etc.) are all beautiful. About half of the cutscenes are done with player models, and about half are CG, but it can at times be tough to tell the difference. I’m still trying to find a cutscene reviewer, but no luck so far. The gameplay is different from that of previous FFs; battle is realtime, but you can create a sort of artificial intelligence (gambits) that control player actions. You can still issue direct commands if you wish (and you will sometimes have to), but by the time I got to the final boss, I was so over-leveled I just let the gambits do all the work. The spell/magic/abilities system is new too, where each player must “license” the spell or ability, and then the party must purchase the spell (once) before it can be used. There is, in my experience, less specialization among the characters in XII than there has been in the past. You can choose to specialize, but you can accrue license points so quickly that you can out-license yourself and you can have unlocked spells and abilities before the game will let you buy them. All in all, 9.5/10 for interface, 7.5/10 for story, 9/10 for art. Worth the wait and the time.
