In the end noone should have the power to take another man's life and yet... that is the way it is. Concerning your examples, we have plenty of right to own a cat or dog so long as they are treated well. We're actually pampering them compared to the alternative wild, and I'm sure they like that XD. As for police and their power, well aren't they just trying to prevent the sensless killing in the first place [at least the ones who aren't corrupted]. And if they HAVE to kill someone, isn't it better that one life is lost than five or ten, as horrible as that sounds? We do make our own rules in the end, but I think it's for the best.
For some I can see why they approve of the death penalty. Imagine your whole family was killed by one man. Would you not want to kill him. As much as I am against it, I know I would be tempted like hell to strangle him with my own hands. We can be blinded by fury. So say they kill the man and people are outraged on both sides of the debate. Can you blame relatives for wanting him dead. From the outside, from our point of view, he should not be killed. But that is because it didn't happen to us, so we know not of what it feels like. So in the end, even if killing him was "wrong", some things will never be justified or classified as the right or wrong choice. After all, right and wrong are relative to the person. That's why I think it wrong while others think it to be right.

I already spoke of the murder thing and I don't think you're getting my point.
First of all, NO MATTER WHAT, it is not our place to take another man's life, but sometimes we must. Second of all, I wasn't friggin referring to some psycho genecide dictator like Hitler or Saddam, just a regular murderer
And even then we could use Saddam for information and who's to say he can't be rehabilitated, though unlikely. But anger blinds us from seeing the right choice from a neutral standpoint, which is sadly the reason why the death penalty was ever created
