Party Choosing
The game had like no story BUT the character choosing was soooo awesome, IMO. FF5 was the next time that was so fun.
What was the strangest party you all chose and won with? I did 4 black mages... VERY expensive... but possible. 4 white mages... I could not win... they were too weak.

YES they suck at first and then get really amazing, and then I think they kinda suck again later.
The most amazing team at the end though... blackbelts. As masters, I think I killed Chaos in one hit. Or was it 1 round... well annyway he didn't even move.

I always had the same party, two Fighter's, one White Mage, and one Black Mage. I was always too chicken to experiment with the other ones. I never once used a Red Mage.
But ultimately, I think that was the best balanced party. Lot's of muscle when you needed it, and a full array of all the magic the game has to offer.
The thing I liked about customizing in this original game was the way there were always exceptions to so many of the rules. For example, one rule is that no Fighter can use magic. But they can use magic if you give them staffs and artifacts to hold onto which have magical properties to them when used as Items. Another rule is that no Mage can weild a sword. However, I think it was the Masmune that was the strongest sword in the game and any job class in the game could weild it, including a Mage, adding a third Fighter to the game essentially. So there were interesting ways to customize.
Does this make any sense? lol

Yes he is right! That's the only way I think mages can win alone... because they can use the Masamune.

Yeah, I usually gave the Masamune to my White Wizard, and then I would have essentially three strong sword weilders and a strong Black Wizard so I could blast through just about anything.

I used Fighter, Red Mage, White Mage & Black Mage. A common party, although I think replacing Red Mage for another Fighter might be more powerful.
I haven't tried much of the Theif or black belt. I know each one has their own advantages, but I just find the others classes much more useful.

It is not who one uses, but who they do not take along.
A Black Belt may seem as a good idea, because you save much gil-however the oppression of physical strength they are believe to bring falls pray to balance. They may make twice as much damage to the enemies, and may dwarf the others in HP, but they take just as much damage as everyone else, and are ridiculously weak to magic.
What it means is that you will spend so much time healing and reviving them, or wasting your potions on them. And so, I rule them out-along with the thief who seems to have no special advantage aside from getting killed and never dealing any damage. They do have unique spells attributed to them, however one can easily do without them, lest ye be lazy and wish to warp out of the dungeons. Wait no, the red mage has that...I do not know. Also, I am slightly drunk.

Ummm... Is this the DS version? because I specifically went back to test it and as far as I can tell, no job type other than dark knight can equip Masamune. That is, under level 99. If you mean mages who have reached job mastery, I have not been able to test that yet.
Also: As far as I can tell, other than a negligible difference in HP, leveled-up monk is at least as good, if not better than black belt. Yeah. And: I always keep field spells on Arc (white mage, more recently geomancer) and switch spells with Luneth (red mage) to actually teleport.
Man I love this game.
