No one ever asks about how to revive Aerith? She fought a lot more than Leo did. Anyway, Kefka and Sephiroth have both killed a lot of people beyond main characters. It doesn't matter if Zebus manipulates, that's insidiousness, not evil.

They're all basically just evil, it's really hard to rank evil, you have to be more specific about what oyu're comparing.

Kefka was actually insane, his mind was damaged by the Magicite infusion since he was the first Rune Knight. It could have just as easily been Celes, but they had made it safer by the time they used it on her.

Oddly enough, Gestahl is probably more evil than Kefka, he was the one who freakin' killed Terra's parents. I was really conflicted when Kefka killed him, I didn't know who to root for. Kefka definately becomes more destructive than Gestahl, but he sort of has an excuse for it, being batty. Gestahl is evil, but in a ruthless selfish non-hating non-maniacal way.

Of course, I cannot deny the Jumbo Cactuar....that thing is the epitome of evil. Just look at him fall when you finally DO beat him!

I still say Yevon. He screws up peoples lives across an entire civilization for a thousand years, just for his own selfish wish to keep his little fantasy Zanarkand alive. All of his underlings who actually know who or what he is want their revenge, and he even manipulated the summoners into sacrificing the person most important to them in the world to be his pawn, which is like the exact opposite of the theme of half the games in the series (Love -and giant swords- conquers all).
Why wouldn't a phoenix down or something bring back Aerith? Sephiroth didn't use a spell or perma-death technique to kill Aeriuth, he just stabbed her. They should have called it something like K.O. Revive, because Phoenix Down is supposed to bring people back from the dead.
And Giant Cactuar is only misunderstood. I mean, he found out that his mother was an evil plant from another planet, and that he was just a disposable experiment to be a super cactuar soldier. Who wouldn't want to wage destruction on the world? (totally kidding)

Here is a slight theory, although by no means to be taken into complete consideration...it seems that the Phoenix Down item in most Final Fantasies is described as something to bring back from a ''swooned'' (Swoon, Ha ha.) or ''knocked out'' state.
It does not bring back from the dead. Being knocked out and having one's HP reduced to 0 is not state of death, but the incapacity to keep on fighting.

Kind of like really strong whiskey or some such thing!

I believe the player is only Game Over once all party members are knocked out because after one can no longer wage war, the victors are free to do what they will with the incapacitated party members. Finish them off, jail them, rape them, whatever would send them to death one way or another, hence negating any reason why the story should even go on, if the player cannot overcome a random or specific assault.

Otherwise, if something in the light of death should happen which pertains to the main plot, it is scripted as continuity, such as being thrown into the sewers in Final Fantasy VII for example, or Kuja besting the party early in Final Fantasy IX.

Aerith, obviously, for the sake of the plot, had to die...and even though your party members will suffer much worse injuries then a skewering by a sword, which should, by all rights, lead to complete death, I guess the way it was presented came with the absolute evidence of death...even though such, in respects to being stepped on, drilled up or cremated by gods and ancient beings, should have easily been remedied by a Phoenix Down from a ''knocked Out'' state.

I see your point however, the whole aspect seems ridiculous. Almost more then this post...what the hell am I talking about?

Perhaps it is because it was not just any sword...but the Masamune.

Nah, Yunalesca's just forcing the summoners to reenact her sacrifice because she's just another pawn of Yevon (or probably a cohort, rather than a pawn) and is either clueless that ther'es another way, or is just covering for Yevon because she still loves him, and would rather keep him alive and keep her status as the original high summoner than let him die because of her betrayal. Wow, that was a serious run-on sentence. Anyway, she's still less evil than Yevon, because her evil originates with him.

And Yuna's namesake can't possibly be the most evil FF character.

She allowed Auron to become an ascended being. Dead, yeah, but still with more powers than mhe had while he was alive.

And ShuYin's just a whiny twerp on whom Tidus was based by Yevon, possibly seeing that he might fall in love with Yuna, who looiks like Lenne, and ShuYin would want to take her back, messing with Yuna's image of Tidus. It all boild down to Yevon if you want to get technical and conspiracy-theorist about it.
