I've just killed the Lich and ignited the earth crystal, characters now on Lv17 and heading for the volcano. Those random battles sure are frequent! Love the canoe.

Lamentably, they don't.
The only two bosses remotely hard are Tiamet and Chaos.
But try and fight the warmech, that'll give you a kick in the teeth.
