Well, here’s what we know so far as of this day, January 8, 2008:

So far there have been only a few confirmed characters. The first and most obvious is the girl seen for most of the trailer who has been given the alias Lightning. I say “alias” because Square Enix has confirmed that this is not her true name, as she is suffering from some sort of amnesia similar to that of Terra from FFVI. The true nature and search of her true identity will most likely compose a large part of the story. She wields a weapon which appears to be similar to Squall’s gunblade, as it is seen in the trailer to be used as both a melee attack weapon and a firearm. Lightning will be the main protagonist.

The second character is the young man code-named by FF fans all over the web as Mr. 22 Caliber because of his gun. It is unknown at this time whether he is a love interest to Lightning or not.

We also know that the use of summons will not be limited to just one character. It has been leaked from an extended trailer seen only behind closed doors that Mr. 22 Caliber is the one responsible for the Shiva summon seen in the most recent trailer. The Shiva summon is also the bike that he is seen riding to Lightning’s rescue at the tail-end of this same trailer. (On a side-note… does anybody think this dude looks kinda like Cloud with a bandana on his head, I kinda do)

Another character who will be present (although it is unclear if he will be a playable character) is the young man who is also seen in the image stills for the companion game FFXIII Agito.

Again, in the most recent trailer, which has not been publicly released, it has been leaked that this young man summons a creature which appears to be Carbuncle!!! I’m very excited about seeing a return of this summon as Carbuncle was always one of my favs.
The only other thing known about this individual at this time is that he attend a magic school similar to the seeD Gardens in FFVIII and his form of attack appears to be via using cards similar to a style of YuGiOh or something. Hopefully more information will come out soon because this dude seems pretty cool.
Another summon which has been described by those who have witnessed the “behind-closed-doors” trailer mentioned previously is a feminine looking spirit which resembles Sirin from FFVIII.

And of course there is also the dark and mysterious young man who seems to be the main character in FFVII Versus which will be released shortly after the main title. Not much is known about this guy, except that he is uber powerful with magic and has a thing for swords. It has been released that he is a prince of some kind of royal family and he is responsible for protecting the last remaining source of power in this world… which of course takes the form of the ever popular recurring symbol in the FF series, Crystals!

Sorry for the double post, but there’s just too much to say in one (I’m sure you’ll all forgive me):

Now, as for the environment in FFXIII, it has been released that it takes place in a world called Pulse, which is in the midst of much turmoil and civil war. (most likely the setting of FFXIII Versus).
Another important setting in the game will be an enormous floating city named Cocoon which we have seen a lot of in the trailers:

Little is known about this floating city other than the inhabitants who live in Cocoon are deeply afraid of the world below which has been racked with war and chaos.

And of course it appears that everyone’s favorite FF cornerstone will be included as well, AIRSHIPS. Which I suppose is not surprising based on the technologically advanced nature of what we have seen so far of the game.


Of course most is still speculation at this point. I think about the only thing we know 100% for sure so far is that JET73L is gonna totally rock this game out when it’s released.

I can't wait for either of these games. I truly hope there not messing up with the summings by turning them into things. Its almost like there freakin transformers or something. I heard that Bahamut was going to be a sword. How very awkward would that be?

I gotta admit though Versus looks better to me. It seems to have that dark overtone that I like. But the next gen consoles make the graphics look super unreal.

I have read that after XIII they are going to Crystal Fabouls (sp?) for like the next ten FF games. So I highly doubt there will be a FFXIV for a very long time.
