Well all I can say is I run a small army of about 150 people in my linkshell that does events from level 20 on up. We do rank missions for all members under level 50 to get them to rank 6 before they are high levels. Are Dynamis and Sky starts at at level 65 which is kinda high level but not based on "end game" standards of 75.
The economy in the game has changed a lot over the 4 years I have played. Now its not all about making gil to buy items. Like with the assaults you start at lvl 55 to get the items you would have purchased in the past. Also there is the new equipment that can be purchased from doing campaigns in the zones of the past of Vana'diel. These not only replace the way you get your equipment but also are setup so you can play for just short periods of time. There are lot of events that you can join that only take an hour to complete from start to finish.
Yep I know many people who left the game cause of time and frustration with getting items. They are coming back now and finding much has changed.
