We're not sure why for example hot dogs come in packs of 8 while buns come in packs of 12. Our science has proved that this is so, but just because god created the hot dogs doesnt mean that science is wrong, if you will xD

A nasty gimmick..so you will have to purchase more hot dogs if you plan to make more then eight, even if it was less then twelve.

More money for others.
Perhaps such a strange reflection could indeed be pointed towards religion and its control over man.
Very well, that is indeed lame but...religion has used fear and violence for a very long time, in order to control others. The Church would find whatever reason it needed to claim land or wealth, and used God to do it.
Today, religion is no longer the same, however the fact that there are many believers this day, enough to keep religious organizations thriving may just suggest that this fear is still rampant, even if it less then forced upon anyone, and no longer used by humans. (In some countries anyway.) The desire for an explanation is innate, a lot more so then manipulations. (We have more politics for this today, anyway.

)
My thoughts for this is because of the discovery of many things, such as deeper philosophies, science and technology. This already highlights what you have said about mankind using religion to explain the unknown, such as death or the essence and awareness of ''being''. Because many human wonders still are not put to light, and this triggers fear, so one will still look for guidance and protection somewhere. No need for oppression.
To return to the begining of the topic, all those theories and points of view spawned from The Bible, for example, are only that...there are different variations of what people may believe God to be, but He is indeed what man would deem as ''perfect'', or everythiing they are not.
To protect us, to rid us of our fears, to give mankind hope.
To retain such relief from the hard reality of our world, people will fix whatever loop holes they may discover, even if such may be a sin. We will always mold beliefs and come up with different explanations for what cannot be explained, if only to chase away the ''darkness''. Fear, hesitation...knowing is power, and if we cannot have this power, we let it in the hands of another. Never mind to suffer at the hands of popular defeat.
To me everything I hear about God and His attributed beliefs is very human, it reeks of human nature.
As an example, if it is said that God is caring, yet lets us suffer, some will suggest that we have free will upon which to decide where it is we shall end up in the afterlife. But is this not simply an excuse we use for ourselves to justify the suffering through the world, hence that God may not be a loving one? Desire and fear seemed to have given form to almost anything we believe when it has to do with spirituality, almost to the point that whatever theories we have of God and His ways are rendered useless, as long as they serve their purpose. If indeed, that is what it is.
Very interesting theories have been posted about the different beliefs of God (Such as Him not caring and/or being unable to help.) but to me, all of them must be machinations of the brain for..eeh..spiritual relief?
Actually, after re-reading the whole post, it makes little sense. I know what I am trying to say, but I cannot seem to put it into words, heh. It must be a lack of knowledge. Now I fear everyone will laugh at me.
So I must be making sense
somewhere.
