If you think of this with evolution in mind, the question unravels itself. rephrase it to "why did we evolve?" and it answers itself. We are because there was an ecological nieche and we filled it. That is all. No higher purpose, no devine being guiding us towards an inevitable grand design. We are here because there was a space in the universe for super intelligent monkeys with opposable thumbs.

Intelligent monkeys. It's another of many things that is probably correct, but humans don't want to think that this is all they amount to, do they?
That's one of the reasons we have religion- it makes people feel special, like they belong, like they have purpose and meaning. It also explains away that old fear we have of death, one of the very things that sets us apart as humans. I'm not saying animals want to die, but they don't fear it like we do, so of course people find comfort in religion. Who wants to actuall feel like thay are just another common life-form? Even atheists probably find that concept quite miserable, even if they believe it.
And surely even intelligent monkeys can live more than once? If we are commited to the earth once we die, then at the very least we would be reincarnated through the earth's cycles- if we are buried, we become part of the earth which makes flowers and plants grow, which we eat or have sex amongst (I was conceived in a cornfield)- if we are incinerated, our ashes also settle on the earth or in the sea becoming part of our food and drink, especially if the ashes land in somebody's drink- and so on. So even if you look at reincarnation in a very base sense, it still is very plausible for us to have multiple lives.
Btw, can you explain the opposable thumbs part? My thumbs are both very different sizes, but there's only me who has that problem, and it's probably nothing to do with what you mean, so please elaborate for me...

look at your foot. Your big toe, the "thumb" of your foot is next to your other toes. with your hand, the thumb is farther away from the rest of the fings and has increased mobility, allowing you to grasp things and manipulate them delicately.
and your long rant on reincarnation and whatnot does not awnser the question of why we are here.

It doesn't intend to, I would be foolish to think I have all the answers. It's purely conjecture
Thanks for explaining about thumbs anyway...

Wow Miss Lockheart! You completely described exactly what I think about this subject.
I think religion may be a way to make people feel worthwhile and protected, to feel that death is not the end.
What a deep conversation! I love it!

Of course! I still want to know if there is anyone out there who has different sized thumbs, or am I just a freak (don't answer that! ) Oh btw, you seriously need to come back, everyone misses you, and though we have only had this brief interchange, I am very curious!
Glad to see you around Kalika, love the avatar! I always stress when I talk in this area that I really know nothing, I just speculate whilst I try to seek the answer! I'm pretty dumb really!

No, no, no! You're not dumb at all. I am also a Wiccan and practise Tarot when I can. I hate calling it a religion though, I feel the word 'religion' these days is a negative word - when I say it, write it etc. I just think of all those political maniacs that we call prime ministers (or presidents or terrorist groups) who have used their religion as an excuse to kill and maim. If you look back at most wars since the beginning of man, religion has been the reason to declare it.
I see Wicca simply as a way of life. I find it so soothing and enjoyable and simple! As long as you're not hurting anyone you can do what you want. Or how we say it in the Wiccan Rede, "An' ye harm none, do what thou wilt". However, despite my love for Wicca I am incredibly open-minded about theories and ideas with regards to why we are here and whether there really is any spiritual intervention and I do question everything; my life, Wicca, me. I cannot blindly follow anything - that's just the way I am. And still, I return to Wicca because it 'makes sense' to me, it suits me. I started studying when I was about 13 and thought it was just a phase, but here I am at 22 still loving it!
And 23 is NOT old!

 Wow, thanks Kalika!!
I often still wonder if I would be classed as a Wiccan, since I follow some aspects of it but not others. It's difficult to do the things I want with a little one around, but I do get a lot of comfort from the bits I do practice, simply because they feel very natural to me, like I was always supposed to do them. I do like the Wiccan Rede, I found it in a book a few months ago and I agreed with it a lot. It's not threatening like the bible or the koran.
Yaya you are my age!!!! Though I do love it here because age doesn't seem to matter, we still all get on so well. And we bounce ideas around and nobody is judgemental, and we don't get too serious. We fit right in here!!
