Will it ever reach a level where it can be considered intelligent? capable of learning? and if so is it something to be feared or praised? should we welcome our own creations amoung us with open arms or keep a gun behind our back just in case?

probably.
It may already have, depending what you mean by learning.
Depends if it tries to overthrow us. think it woulcd be something to be praised, with caution.
Instead of a gun, we should set up certain rules which, aside from asimov rules, also allow termination if rendered incompliant with the wishes of humans or human laws. And certainly by a system that is not, in itself, intelligent or able to be attacked feasily by AI.

The most intelligent AI that I have seen is probably the furby >.<
So I don't think there will be fully thinking AI very soon.
But if we do succeed we should build in 3 kill switches just in case

I would destroy every AI machine! They will always go out of controll sooner or later. Human must remain the only smart creature.....at least on Earth....

Haha, indeed. In fact in a recent scientific article I glanced at, the most powerful AI that has currently been developed is still not even close to as complex as the brain of the common ant. So, although computers or robots with artificial intelligence may one day be a threat to mankind... I do not think we have anything to worry about, all of us here on the forum will likely be all dead before there is any chance of a threat. What a strange thought that is huh? XD

Today, technology is one of the fun trends to scare people with in movies and printed fiction, there has been a lot of it lately, especially since The Matrix (although there was also a lot of it before as well); and it's all prety interesting stuff. But it is something that is out of our hands right now, so we just have no way of predicting for sure if conflict such as those SoS have proposed will happen. Whereas it is LIKELY that forshadowers could see predictions come true when theorizing about man-made war and diseases, even if they are to happen a very long time from now.

Although I do believe that robots will one day advance to an unbelievable and impressive level, I like to think that the problems we have discussed will never happen though, I think robots are so cute. I would love to have one of my own, especially to do my dishes. Oooh I hate doing dishes. And I would just absolutely cry if I had to bash it's little head in if it came after me with the shard of a broken glass.
