Cabinet reshuffle.
What do we think of Blair's cabinet reshuffle?
Quote:
Prime Minister Tony Blair has fired Home Secretary Charles Clarke as he carried out a ruthless Cabinet reshuffle after Labour's pounding at the polls on Thursday night.
John Reid was drafted in Clarke's former role, his post as Defence Secretary going to Gordon Brown loyalist Des Browne, formerly Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott retained his Cabinet seat and his title - but was stripped of his department, in a move No 10 insisted had been discussed between Mr Blair and his deputy 12 months ago. Mr Prescott, still reeling from the exposure of his affair with secretary Tracey Temple, will chair several key Cabinet committees and continue international work with a special focus on China and Eastern Europe, said Downing Street.
Mr Blair shunted Jack Straw sideways from the Foreign Office to become Leader of the Commons and sidelined Ruth Kelly as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in the wake of the school paedophile row.
Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong, who famously lost the Government a knife-edge vote by one - Mr Blair's own after he had been sent home - was moved into the new post of Social Exclusion minister, retaining Cabinet status as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Home Office minister Hazel Blears was parachuted into the Cabinet as Labour Party Chair and Minister Without Portfolio. Meanwhile, Alan Johnson replaced Ruth Kelly as Education Secretary and his post at Trade and Industry was taken by by Alistair Darling. Mr Darling was replaced as Transport Secretary and Secretary of State for Scotland by Douglas Alexander.
In the Westminster musical chairs Geoff Hoon swapped his Commons Leader role for the more junior role of Minister for Europe within the Cabinet - replacing Mr Alexander.
Margaret Beckett takes over from Mr Straw to become Britain's first woman Foreign Secretary. Former Work and Pensions Minister Stephen Timms comes into the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Rising star David Miliband swaps his Cabinet seat as local government minister for his own department, taking over from Mrs Beckett at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Labour's new Chief Whip is ex-education minister Jacqui Smith, who enters the Cabinet for the first time. And the outgoing party chairman Ian McCartney changes his Cabinet role for a demotion to Minister of State for Trade working jointly at the Department for Trade and Industry and the Foreign Office.

Clarke definatly had to go. Not only did he make obviously poor decisions on immigration but he was SO damn ugly
I think its stupid the way theyre keeping prezza on his current pay, and letting him keep his home and jags even though he now officially has no power. If thats not a waste of taxpayers money then I dont know what is

As much as I hate the man, you can't blame yob culture on the labour government. We've been yobs for years, way before Blair came into power
