If I recall correctly, the heme of XIII is technology, far more so than FFVII. Thus,it makes sense for them to weild weapons of a technological nature.
My theories on the chainsaw engine:
a. vibroblade. Chainsaw engine caused sword to work like an electric turkey knife.
b. chunk'd. engine powers pneumatic comporessor that shoves the blade forward, or possibly during overdrives has a far more drastic effect, such as a long-range attack or literally shooting the blade at a mid- to long-range opponent.
c. Added Effect. All the weapons in the game are combined in some way with another weapon (probably a sword). The long-range weapons can be used further away in a 3-d fight, and the sword bits can be used for more... FF-style battles close in (think Balthier FFXII and Cloud FFVIIAC)

AHA! Yes JET, that had not occured to me. So these weapons can probably get away with this little eccentricity. I seem to recall reading that XIII will be the most sci-fi-ish FF, well, ever. At least the most technologically based since VIII. I have to admit though, do like that sword with the engine on it. VROOM VROOM!

Yeah, maybe all the summons will be vehicles, erm, but Carbuncle is so small, what the hell will he be? A pogo stick... or rollerskates?
