What happens to enemies (return characters possible)
Theory: When you defeated Heartless in the first game, they dissolved into darkness. The Nobodies seemed to dissolve into nothing. This second statement may not be true.
When you defeat Heartless, they may only be broken down into a form that could be absorbed by the keyblade; they not only add to the power of the keyblade (explaining most power increases as you level up), they also give physical form to the keyblade, which is normally only an intangible projection of the weilder's soul.
Nobodies, when they are defeated, seem to become nothing: this would be a mistake. What is actually happening is that the Nobody is fusing with it's heartless counterpart via the Keyblade and returning to it's own world. If it's world is still sealed, it is locked in a state of hibernation. This reduces slightly the power of the keyblade itself, but the keyblade wielder is becoming stronger anyway as the power of light overall is increased.
In the realm of darkness, or some level of kingdom Hearts, or somplace yet undiscovered, the keyblades Riku, Kairi, Mickey, etc. have are all connected to the master keyblade, so the defeated heartless and nobodies are still fused no matter if their defeated by "different" keyblades.
