Patrician, not king. And I
loved Jeremy Irons as Vetinari! Tim Curry as
was unexpected.
For those who don't read the series: There are several main groups in the series, as well as a few standalone books. There are (WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS):
-The City Watch: Run by Samuel Vimes (Lawful Good taken to the extreme for lawful and attempts to not overlook the "good" aspect), also includes Sgt. Colon and Cpl. Nobbs (Those Two Guys; the former is the inept, lazy comic relief and the other holds the petty cash supply [unofficially] and needs a piece of paper saying he's human), Carrot (intensely loyal and charisma so strong it's practically a charm spell, may be the missing king of the main city-state), Angua (a mostly-vegetarian werewolf who is quite enamored with Carrot), and various supporting cast: Detritus (troll with siege crossbow), various dwarfs (currently Sgt, Littlebottom, head of forensics), Constable Visit (evangelism through pamphlets), and Reg Shoe (zombie).
Usually a pastiche of film noire and detective stories and shows. Also a wossname of the human condition.
-Death: Death (the personification thereof), Susan (his granddaughter, currently a schoolteacher), The Death of Rats (the personification thereof), Albert (wizard who lives in Death's domain and takes care of the manor so as to avoid death by old age), Mort (the apprentice), Ysobel (the daughter), and the Auditors of Reality (recurring antagonists, who hate anything unpredictable, such as humans)
-The Witches: Granny Weatherwax is not the leader (because she says so

), Nanny Ogg is the...local source of double entendre, Magrat is the "apprentice" (super new-age and eventually
), and Agnes (sometimes called Perdita) is the new kid with a borderline split personality.
Focuses on older literature, like fairy tales and shakespeare's plays.
-The Wizards (and Rincewind): Archchancellor Ridcully (likes hunting and exercize, unlike most wizards), the various Chairs of the university (each have their own running gags), The Librarian (runs the magical library; also an orangutan. Shows up in a lot of non-wizard stories), and Rincewind (not really limited to the Wizards stories, it's more that the wizards are generally in his stories, he survived as many incredibly dangerous situations as he has by being very fast and very lucky- in fact, that being his patron goddess. Also, The Luggage is his, which is a homicidal walking trunk that's bigger on the inside).
Crosses over with Roundworld (Earth) in The Science of Discworld I-III (not like The Science of Final Fantasy or the books the thread is based on, it's about real-world science)
Also, in recent books, Moist von Lipwig (pronounced Lipvig) and company: Vetinari "convinces" him to take over and fix up different government establishments (post office, royal bank). Love interest basically subverts every love interest cliche in the book.
Other recurring groups and characters (both standalone and recurring):
- Monks of Time: rebuilt history, and keep time in order. Lu-Tze is important. They know kung-fu.
- C.M.O.T. Dibbler: If there's a shady business scheme, he's probably behind it. Sells nearly inedible "sausage-inna-bun" and supposedly-meat pies between schemes. Known for hisa catch phrase "and that's cutting me own throat" when he sells something for less than an inordinate cost.
- Igors: A family where each member is both Frankenstein and his monster, but prefers the "igor" role to more traditional mad scientists.
- Gaspode the Wonder Dog: His name oversells him, but he does talk.
- the Begars: Kicked out of the beggars' guild. Often shown in conjunction to Gaspode.
- the Ankh-Morpork Times: Newspaper staff that started in
The Truth
I'm probably forgetting a lot of minor/recurring groups and characters, but the post would run out of space if I tried to list them all.
For SoS and anyone else who reads the series: What books do you like most? What characters? Any favorite things about the series?
