I guess it's just because Latin sounds more sinister and mysterious than English.

Hey everyone
I figured its Latin for a couple of reasons, like pointed out Latin is a darker language, and isn't really used in the modern world anymore, where as English and Japanese are common for people likely to play Final Fantasy VII.
but I don't know ask the legend that is Nobou Uematsu

For some reason, many ominous events throughout history were represented in this language, especially religion, even though the populace might have spoken a completely different language.
Latin is said to be derived loosely from the Greek language, mainly used by the Romans after that.
But true Latin was not spoken as much as late Latin, and much of it was lost during the Black Plague. But for a long time, Latin was an obligatory language of the Church, and way until the late 1800's, most people who wanted to get a high profession had to learn the language, or in any case many different bastard varieties of Latin conjured during the 15th and 16th centuries...
I mean maybe since the history of that entire language is mostly lost, it seems mysterious, and the fact that the Church, at its highest peak adopted the language represent for many people a sense of power, and might have influenced many forms of entertainment later on...music, literature...and as we can see, some video games.
Maybe it was that sense of power, unflinching stature and mystery that influenced the state of Sephiroth..he DOES say he will become a god, in his own words. And his death, his plan was a page in the history of the FFVII world. The whole setup is almost trite, I think..Jenova seems responsible for mostly everything..
Although why anything in Latin sounds so impressive, I can only speculate, but it seems people love it, even without knowing much of it, including me.
I checked it out on a site, and they said before Rome was founded, everyone spoke Latin, so how could it be derived from Greek..?
