Hmm i can see where I might not have justified myself enough. Let me explain some of my theories further +).
With regards to the changed forms of sephiroth at the end, it is probably due to Jenova cells taking effect on him. Throughout the game, we keep fighting monstrous forms of Jenova. Those forms had actually originated from body parts of Jenova, and changed to battle form when facing AVALANCHE. The same is done when fighting Hojo; he changes to another monstrosity probably due to the effects of Jenova. Similarly, Sephiroth also changed into battle mode when facing Cloud's gang. Remember at the beginning of the movie, the introduction? They showed all the 8 remaining members of AVALANCHE fighting Sephiroth. Although he wasn't in his monstrous form, he WAS still there, and he WAS still fighting them in actual combat.
Yes I agree that probably no one could survive after falling into a mako pit. But we did see for ourselves in the game that Sephiroth was released from ice after being given the Black Materia (the same time all the WEAPONs were released)That'd mean he was out there doing some damage. If they fought only him only in their minds, how could he be killed ultimately? The last Sephiroth Cloud fought was the one in his mind, no doubt about that. All the clones have the Sephiroth element in them. That was why even though Sephiroth has supposedly died, his spirit still lives on. What Cloud did was to eliminate the Sephiroth that had been controlling him all this while, the part of his mind that had convinced him to go to the Reunion, the one that forced him to follow Sephiroth's will. It is the same for Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. Aside from Jenova, they also have Sephiroth's element in them, which is ultimately the one controlling them. Kadaj can "feel" Sephiroth the same way Cloud could before he killed him in his mind.
Cloud, when he was born, was not already a Clone of Sephirtoh. It was only after Hojo had experimented on him that he could be considered one, and a "failed" one at that. However, Cloud stopped being a clone at the end of the game, the moment he killed the Sephiroth in him that is controlling him.
Yes i'd like to apologise for what i wrote. It wasn't "I was only a clone after all..". My subs were "I was only a puppet after all.." It seems that he really were doing Sephiroth's work after all, and Jenova had wanted to use Sephiroth instead of him right from the start. That'd mean that Sephiroth was indeed an element inside of them, and it wouldn't be irresponsible to say that they could in fact be clones of Sephiroth.
Even though they were called "spirits" in the subs, I believe this could be a translation error (like Tseng being spelled as Shion in my subs, i find that really amusing lol!) . Or , like the movie says, it refers to spirit of Sephiroth. With Sephiroth living in them, they can no doubt be considered spirits in which Sephiroth could control. They were, after all, created using Sephiroth's cells.
Haha like I said, these are MY theories. Hopefully someday we will know the REAL truth.
