I always go through it on my own at first, then a second time with some help, either from guides or FAQ's, in order to confirm mine own skills in games.
However, I am not going to stay stuck on some puzzle for two hours. No no no. I hate that. If it takes that long I will look it up. (Screw you, Xenosaga and Wild Arms, you bastards.)
Things like block puzzle these days are archaic. Why do we still have block puzzles in this day and age? If I went inside some moldy old cave that had not been visited by man for a million centuries, as IF there would be random perfectly shaped blocks just sitting there, waiting for me to memorize some order and mess with them. NO. I hate blocks, cubes, tiles, squares gtfo out of my games omfg I hate blocks.
This said, I have very little patience for this. Just today, while playing Wild Arms, after a second try I looked up for some help. THAT being said, playing a game is meant to be entertaining. I do not mind puzzles or hard to beat enemies or whatever, but block puzzles, just, NO.
I have nothing against people who use guides. If it is fun for them, who is anyone to judge? Who really cares about gaming skills anyway? If someone has fun without them, then such is fine as well. Some people play for the stories more than the gameplay, they may not wish to wrack their brains. The important thing is to have fun, whatever way one has of doing such, and however they perceive it.
I do not like using them because in my experience it can ruin some things, but it cannot be argued that often times, there are things you absolutely need a guide for. :/ This for me comes the second time around.
Cheat codes are different though, I so totally never use that. An in game glitch is fine; not my problem if the game programmers overlooked this, and yes, I shall exploit if it serves any purpose. But, built in codes like infinite lives pretty much defeat the purpose, although it can be fun once you've done all in the game and are bored.
