There ARE cures for cigarettes, cigarettes SHOULD be illegalised, there is nicotine gum and patches etc. Alcohol is more understandable, and one pint of alcohol isn't breathed in by several people at one time causing potential damage to all of them because of one selfish idiot.

Why should any of it be illegal? If the populace wants to escape reality, I don't see any reason why anybody should be able to tell them they can't.
By the way, TGA, I AM for the legalization of drugs. I am NOT pro-drugs. I do not believe people should go out and pump heroin into their systems. I do think they should be allowed to do so however.
I do NOT find anything inherently wrong with using mild drugs for recreation purposes, particularly if that drug's negative effects on one's health are mild. Alchohol has been set as sort of an acceptable benchmark for what should be accepted as reasonable. If this is the case, marijuana is FAR less hard on the body than alchohol is, however I fear that this isn't the reason that marijuana is looked down upon so much. Anyway....

It is looked down apon so much becouse its effects long and short term, are most unknown to sientist today. So they ilegalized it. They should make MOST drugs not all but most legal. As long as it stays under contal. At my schools homcoming laster it was so bad that this year just to enter you get breatherlizered. That is just shamful. No i was not part of this horible display of when teens get drugs. Just shamful.

Well, some would wonder why I bother to make a message here, since I am rather apatthetic on the subject..
But there are some good points that have already been pointed out, and would just like to say a few things about them.
Personally, I do not really care what other people do, as long as I am lect out of it.
But in a closer look, many people try drugs out of curiosity..some stay because they need to evade reality.
Perhaps it is I who is weak, but I find this world in which we live a rather harsh and deplorable place..so whatever it is people may find to ease from their suffering is very understanble, at least I think so, if I were ever to be asked.
On the other hand, drugs have nasty side effects and results...and not all those who use them are quite aware of it.
They should probably inform themselves first, or at the very least use better judgement? In any case, what others do is none of my concern.
But for those whom it may erk..someone already mentioned it here...how come heroine or cocaine is illegal, while tobacco and alcohol is not?
Indeed, heroine will kill faster, but tobacco kills a lot more. I mentioned the need to escape reality, and oftentimes, people may use alcohol just for that matter, but correct me if I am wrong, but it more often then not makes everything worse.
The only reason I can think of such a ridiculous twist of law is because, alcohol and tobacco are profitable.
Even if it kills or ruins more lives then any other drug ever could.
If these other substances could be made to harvest profit, I am sure they would be legal as well.
The moral part of the subject leads me to think that all these things should be destroyed, but people use them all the time. They are a part of our lives, and it ends there. So it could never happen..and if it did, what kind of state would our society be in?
Because many different people use drugs, or drink..not just the stereotypical kids and punks everyone labels.
And besides, I smoke cigarettes, so they better never make them illegal..or I shall go crazy.

Well, I totally disagree. If you need to use drugs every now and then because you "like it", then you obviously have a serious addiction.
Alcohol, I think is okay, as long as the people who drink are over 21 and drink the right amount without feeling side effects.
Drugs, however, I spit upon because most drugs kill people, and most of them are sold to the public for profit. Even the government doesn't care if thousands of people die everyday because of tobacco, as long as they can get some profit.
Sure, if we made tobacco illegal, the government would lose most of its dollars. But isnt a government made to manage control over their country?
Drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, are all illegal, yet people use them. They can instantly kill people, and even if you do survive, you made have long term side effects and choose to do other drugs. People are either stupid or crazy to do drugs like these.
The drugs that Draggonkain mentioned, that lead you to another 'reality', is just plain bullsh*t. They are just as bad. The users are pathetic enough to actually use a substance to make the harshness of reality go away, and live in their own 'world'.
What they really are is trying to escape the harshness of reality, and not take any blame. They dont care about anything else in their own 'world', and are really acting like selfish, brats.
People with addictions to tobacco or any other drug, get a freaking life. They just depend on a drug to solve their problems, instead of solving it them selves.
That was my longest post ever...

I question whether you've actually done ANY research on this topic nk9. If you look at research that our OWN government has done on the effects of marijuana, then you would know that marijuana has FAR fewer health defects than alchohol (even alchohol at moderate amounts). I won't even go into the positive effects of marijuana (latest government studies claim that marijuana may actually prevent cancer, shrink cancer, and/or relieve pain from cancer that many medicines cannot do.) <--- okay so I did...
Also, is the job of the government to make sure that its citizens are doing exactly what the government wants? Karl Marx thought so. I'm in the school of thought that government should do ONLY what is necessary to maintain capable social order, and leave choice decisions up to its people.
"Well, I totally disagree. If you need to use drugs every now and then because you "like it", then you obviously have a serious addiction."
Do you know what addiction is? Addiction is when your body physically cannot tolerate living without a substance. If you stopped taking said substance, your body would actually become sick before returning to its usual biological foundation. You sometimes like playing video games for fun, so are you seriously addicted? I doubt it.
You pick on a lot of drugs in your little diatribe there. Smoking? Smoking doesn't have that many bad effects until old age. And really, once you reach 75-80 years old, who really cares? LSD and Cocaine both have VERY mild health effects (in fact, LSD has virtually none aside from some people getting flashbacks). (Now heroin, ecstacy... VERY VERY BAD. Anybody who does those is just asking for trouble.)
"People with addictions to tobacco or any other drug, get a freaking life. They just depend on a drug to solve their problems, instead of solving it them selves."
Sometimes it's not about solving the problem. Sometimes it's just about living in the now. If you've got problems and don't necessarily have the time to work through them, or are somehow incapable of getting through them, then it's your own business if you want to 'escape' for a while. It's not pathetic. You're pathetic for passing judgment on those people so harshly. Think about it. Even if you're not the kind of person who would ever do that sort of thing, would you want somebody calling you pathetic if you were just trying to get through life the only way you knew how?
Again, I'm not a drug user, but I do take enjoyment out of defending it, so keep it coming.

I know this is a heated discussion and argument, but maybe I shouldn't have made it

Alcohol does as much damage to one's social and everyday life if it becomes a problem, just like drugs.
So why is it ''okay''? Only because it is legal?

Drugs such as cocaine or heroin are mostly, as far as we know, sold through underground organizations, and the goverrment makes no profit at all from the money being made there.
Indeed, I would certainly not doubt it if officials could or would like to make profit by this, but the fact is the selling of such drugs is under attack by the government.
Of course, not for the health of anyone, but for the benefits, or lost benefits rather, of a few people.

Well is that not a damn deplorable sentence?
So you find this acceptable, and would ''justify'' the means because tobacco is legal?

Yes. So why is that so bad? Are these people hurting you? Are they bothering you?
If not, then why would it erk you so?
Because I doubt that you are much stronger in such regards then any other average shmoe. Methinks you only say these self rightious things because you have not seen much of the world and its reality.

Perhaps they seek escape BECAUSE they realize they are part of the world?
Even so, if they know, what can one person do to change what ails society, should they realize they are to ''blame'' for anything?
And perhaps many of these people do not WANT to solve their problems.
Either way..who cares. It is not your problem, is it?
People who do not care of anything but themeselves..and are selfish.
You will have to explain to me how you are so much better then the rest.
Everyone does it. Through different ways and means. Everyone has a way to escape, weather it be drugs, fighting, drawing, singing and what have you.
So what, would you rather every drug user become a serial killer instead of doing drugs?
There are many ways to cope with reality, and drugs is one way, and harmless, aside from the one using it.
I could understand people being tempted to do drugs by others being morally wrong, but if it is not their thing, then ration and common sense will save them, if they have any.
I tried many different types of drugs when I was a bit younger, and have never become an addict or anything. Unlike you however, I do not claim to walk the stone path without fear.

Well, please do not get me wrong, I do not feel assaulted by this at all. But since I am a person addicted to tobacco, perhaps then anyone who hears it from a smoker will know that cigarettes are certainly not enough at all to ''escape reality''.
Yes, they do decrease the stress when there is too much of it, and seem to help me think clearer when I have one. But other then that...so I need to get a ''freakin' life'' because I decided to use cigarettes to cope with my stress. Noted.
Well, as I stated already, I could not possibly care less what others do to ruin their health, as long as they let me ruin mine in peace.
