Adoptive grandfather, grandfather likely being an honorary term. Like Elder, or something along those lines.

And I preferred the clone theory, although it's possible that everyone was misunderstanding masculine terms in their assumption that RedXIII was male, and his race is entirely females, pregnant at birth like the Godzilla in the Michael Broderick movie.

That's perverse, hahahaha. no way, there has to be another explanation than that. Obviously, the scene takes place 500 after the final events of the game (or 497 years after Dirge of Cerberus if you want to get technical), so isn't it just more likely that Red XIII has come across another being such as himself hiding out there in the wild somewhere during that timespan who escaped Shinra's grasp. Not every little detail in the game needs to be ironed out completely. By the way... I love that ending; I'm so pleased they decided to redo it for the opening of Advent Children. Bravo.
