Was far better than the materia system.
Far easier I say.

Materia system rules. Junction wasn't bad, but it made it too easy to cheat. You could easily horde a hudred of a spell then beef up your stats quite early in the game.

Which made little difference considering how powerful the enemies were in FF8.

Oh please, THEY WERE NOT HARD BY ANY MEANS. If any thing they were easier to defeat thanks to the cheaty junction system then in FF8 And FF7 made you think more about your choices due to their double edged effects!

The junction system is no more a cheat than the materia system.

FF7 meant you had to make choices as you only had limited space and each magic you gained had positive/negative effects while FF8 was only positive making it simpler, but ultimatley, crapper.
