I think it's the way ghosts are portrayed in old scary movies or books, as the nasty white thingie going around causing havoc and scaring people. Because of that we grow up with this stereotypical view of what defines a ghost.
But actually ghosts are not much different from us, in that they are made up of this spirit substance that fills living things. Only it's manifested in a different way, because there is no body to encase it. There are lots of different reasons for spirits to inhabit a certain area- they might feel peaceful there and wish to stay, or they may be tied there by some unfinished business. Some are looking for a reason why they don't live anymore, some are angry about the circumstances of their death, some might not even accept that they are dead. Though of course death doesn't have the finality that we grow up to fear, whatever one might believe.
Sometimes ghosts make a temporary appearance to give a message of some sort, and sometimes they are just there to stay, either out of their choice or because they can't get the help they need to find peace. I believe that most ghosts are the benign ones that are just happy the way they are, and we are only barely aware of their existence, as is probably the case with your family members Zotar. But you do get weird experiences where ghosts go out of their way to get attention, whether because they are being playful or mischievous (^^) or they really want to tell someone something, or get some answers themselves.
That's what makes me curious about my friend the ghosty, I don't know if he's just being playful or if there's something he's trying to tell me.

You know the barn i mentioned before. As long as it has been around Children have been playing in it and adults have been working in it. (Plus that barn is almost hundred years old.) And also, No one in that old and potentially dangerous barn has ever gotten hurt. My mom reckons it is because of the ghost. My oldest brother was pulled off a ladder he was climbing by someone that wasn't there. That ladder, of course has always shooken when someone climbs it. Quite dangerous really. Thats how my mom thinks the ghost is a protector. Quite interesting.

Ya hes all right... it's sad though, It turns out he hung himself in that barn. The poor sap. I wonder if I'll become a ghost and huant some place when i die. Which brings us to that curious Philisophical domain, Death.

Well, can't say I have many ghosts in my flat, but half a year ago the strange noises were coming out of my room... Often when I tried to sleep I heared sudden sound of some thing's moverment. Like someone moved it noisily. Once, when I was doing my homework I heared something like a crack of wood. I was like frosen. And what is the most strange, I was looking just at the place from where, according to my aers, the sound was comming. There was nothing.
In some time it was over, but I still can't fall asleep for a long time after I lay on my bed.

We have (or had) Charlie, the resident family ghost. It's not necessarily his/her/its real name, more of an in-joke, and said manifestation hasn't really had any attributable happenings since we moved a few years back, but it seemed to be a neutral poltergeist, providing no harm, or benefit, merely moving things and unlocking and opening locked doors. Followed parents to last house from I don't know how far back, hasn't made any appearance in our current house that couldn't have easily been the wind or the broken door.

Hmmm I used to have a ghost when I was a child. Many people thought it was an imaginary friend of mine, her name was Mrs Landers (don't know the hell why, I was like 4 years old when I first noticed her) and I could describe very accurately what she looked like. I remember her fondly, she always wore a black shawl and lived behind the cooker. It did seem like an imaginary friend at first, but then my mum noticed things happening like the cooker switching itself off for no reason (it was a gas cooker and the flames would just go out) and the volume of the stereo going up and down.
We moved house when I was 10, and I could sense her with me still for a short while, but then we moved again to where my mum lives now and Mrs L disappeared. After that I never saw anything else, or felt anything, even though my mum says she has seen a dog wandering up and down the stairs of the house. It made me feel quite empty, I felt like I lost a part of myself, whether it was real or not. And it makes me even more determined to try and tune in with spirits, and find out if they really do exist.
Whoo ok now I've freaked everyone out, better hand out the muffins

Me too, I really miss that old she-ghost. It must have been the growing up thing that somehow stopped me seeing her, don't even know if she is still around. Still, even if she was, I don't think she'd throw things like this crazy ghosty I have now!! ^^
Still I wonder if there is a way of communicating with the ghosts without the need of any clairvoyance, though I'm not gonna resort to a ouija board because I get a bad feeling about those things, they give me the creeps

Iv'e never seen an ouija board. Where does one get one?
Iv'e heard that they always say unpleasent stuff. I bet ther are other ways of communing with spirits if at all possible. I bet it would be some sort of meditation that supposedly brings on an out of body experience. They write books on that kind of stuff, but iv'e never tried it. Iv'e known people who have though.
Also, dreams might play a part.
All Humans have phycic abilities , the problem is we don't often know how to use them or we are so self absorbed that we lose them.
