Aaaaw.

Please rise Mlord, there be no need for submission until you enter my bedchambers.
The one thing you must remember as far as the fashioned is concerned, whatever you wear and whatever accessories you decorate yourself with, whether makeup, dog collars, finger claws and what have you, you have to be comfortable with it. For any Goth that dresses in such ways everyday, it has to feel natural. If you are not comfortable wearing something, or if it bothers you and hinders your daily activity and are merely wearing it for show, then it is not right at all. Big trench coats and cloaks look neat of course, but if you do not know to handle yourself with them and knock over chip stands at the convenience store, you will have to learn, or find something else.
Th important part is that people think you look impressive or scary, sexy or that it seems normal for you to wear it. After that, everything else is relative. There are no guidelines in what you are supposed to wear or how to wear it. Of course it is better if you stick to a certain sub genre. If you want to look like Dracula, do not wear a WWII aviator jacket over your dress shirt. But even then-I have seen many Goths who mix things up and look splendid. If you feel comfortable with it, whether you wish to believe it or not, your mood and confidence will highly affect the allure with which you carry yourself with your gettup.
As well, there are quite the misconceptions about the Goth fashion and culture. It does not all have to be black. A women wearing a pink wedding dress with black and white striped stockings and combat boots is just as acceptable, as whatever Goth means, in mind frame as much as fashion, is to go against social norms and upset, disturb or piss people off who will not admit how neat it is. (And various interests, such as Victorian literature or vampire mythology, but by no means must you be a Goth to enjoy any of this.)
Generally yes, it is associated with the dark and macabre, however much of it is versatile, which always makes it interetsing.
I know it sounds corny, but believe me, it is more than true.
